My wants vs. your needs
July 2, 2008
The repercussions of certain sins done behind closed doors (like lying or pornography) may not be as apparent as obvious sins (like theft or murder) but in the long run, they will devour us slowly from the inside out. These tiny details in our lives, we have to pay careful attention to, before the consequences catch up on us. They will throw us in dire straits.
On another note, I think life is too short to be preoccupied with dolling oneself up with wants, or rather, there is more to life than just that. We can never get enough of anything. Covetousness will multiply itself exponentially after each want is met.
Are our wants really that imperative as compared to the needs of the world? Perhaps the want that we yearn is not something which has to do with materialism, it could be friends. If we open our eyes wide enough, they are all around. It is because we are so locked in our own worlds, and everything else is practically given to us freely on a silver platter, we grow oblivious to the blessings that beget us.
In the growing stages of childhood, we were warned not to leave any remnants on our plates after our meals. Sometimes the instruction is accompanied by a reason, but at other times, not. In both cases, the irrational instruction befuddles the young mind. Why do I have to finish up every grain on my plate when it is free? Just because we do not see the blood and sweat our parents poured out in order to earn a living for the family, it does not mean that the food we consume came cheap.
Salvation is free, but it does not come cheap. Like a buffet meal, you can eat all you can, assuming the mentality of a Singaporean, if you do not eat all you can, you are missing out! In the same light, if we do not live out our faith fully, we are shortchanging ourselves and penalising ourselves of His blessings. On the other hand, wastages will result in fines. We can talk a lot about building His kingdom, but of what use would it be when actions do not accompany words? I wouldn’t want to pay for a free buffet.
When we start looking at the needs of the world, our wants would fade away.
What have I done with my salvation so far?
